With almost unanimous vote, 16 to 1, the Foreign Affairs Committee the Senate approved his appointment as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who was immediately dismissed by fellow senators. The vote came after a day of hearing and reflection, and the only vote against came from Republican Senator David Vitter of Louisiana, who expressed concern about possible conflicts interests of the charitable activities of Bill Clinton.
While Clinton is ready to take the place of Condoleezza Rice at the State Department, his colleague Eric Holder is under the lens of the Senate Judiciary Committee for confirmation of his appointment as Attorney General. The procedure will be less rapid and predictable, and Holder has already admitted he made some mistakes. The initial part of the hearing focused on the pardon granted by Holder in 2001, as Deputy Attorney General, the financier Marc Rich and the Vice President Al Gore for a story of illegal campaign contributions dating back to the presidential campaign of 1996.
next steps of the hearing will focus Holder of activity instead of a lawyer about possible conflicts of interest with his new position. The auditions for the role of Attorney General (Minister of Justice) have historically been the most fought, and in recent times two major candidates such as Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas have been rejected by the Senate, while John Ashcroft and Alberto Gonzales have had to work long before to convince the Commission.
